Moou Games: Our story

I started drawing my first board games at the age of 7. Yes, at that time it was really drawing. I had nice thick paper and wonderful Caran D’Ache pens. With my pocket money I bought a ruler and a cutter. My brother – who was almost 3 years old at that time – or my teddy bear had to act as test players.

This is how the first games were born. I simply took the themes from movies and books and thought up a game for them. It was wonderful because I could put myself in another world. I could be an Indian, a raider or an agent in Venice. In the game world everything was possible.

Some of my early games

Change of scope

When I left elementary school, unfortunately the conditions for my passion also changed. The pressure at school – in the 80s creativity was not really a demand – and the growing doubts of my parents towards my time management only allowed me to work on my games during the school vacations. Nevertheless, my brother stood by me and was always ready to test my new creations. The games became more and more sophisticated.

The break

In 1996 the game design came to a complete standstill. I started my architecture studies at that time and had no time left. Also my environment did not understand my passion and pushed me into other hobbies. My life took its course with a marriage, the birth of my wonderful daughter but the board games disappeared into a box in the basement.

In the meantime, I had founded three of my own companies, was an expert in user centered service design and a passionate mountain biker. From time to time I played board games on weekends with my daughter and my partner.

Corona Lockdown

And then in March 2020, the world was haunted by the Corona phenomenon. We sat at home and made sure that the ceiling did not fall on our heads. One day my daughter – now 12 years old – discovered my game box in the basement. We took the games out and my daughter could hardly contain her amazement. She wanted to hear the whole story. Suddenly we sat there, excited, I wistfully and started to play the games. With a distance of 24 years, the games were of course not as sparkling as they were then. Nevertheless, it happened: a spark reignited the fire. It was my daughter who asked me why I had actually stopped? Developing games is something wonderful, something creative and social. When I tried to explain it to her – the answers were not really convincing for either of us – she made the suggestion: Let’s start it up again together. Let’s develop board games together.

Moou Games

That was the starting signal for our new project. Or rather the awakening of an old passion that had fallen asleep. But this time with the most wonderful composition you can wish for: with your own daughter. The passion has crossed the generation line.
